Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday, November 22, 2009.
A powerful Pacific storm brought plenty of active weather to the Pacific Northwest and northern California on Sunday. A surge of moist, onshore flow spread into these regions and translated into waves of precipitation across lower elevations and across the mountains through the early afternoon. The majority of the precipitation in the Pacific Northwest fell in the form of snow, primarily across the Cascades in Washington and the slopes of central Oregon. Strong winds accompanied precipitation in the mountains and caused areas of blowing snow in the mountains with lowered visibilities. Meanwhile, a cold front associated with this system produced a few scattered showers throughout areas of northern California. By the afternoon, the aforementioned disturbances began to weaken significantly as to high pressure began to build into these region.
In the East, another patch of active weather developed in the Southeast as areas of low pressure trekked along the Gulf Coast and lifted across Mississippi. Warm moisture advection associated with these systems produced fairly widespread rainfall from Georgia through western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Temperatures had a difficult time warming during the afternoon due to high pressure sliding down the southeast Atlantic Seaboard with cool northeast flow. Showers and isolated thunderstorms also developed in the northern Florida Peninsula as warm air lifted behind a warm front that became stretched across northern Florida. The heaviest concentration of showers developed to the southeast of Belleview, while additional thunderstorms spread inland from the Gulf of Mexico.
Elsewhere, a stalled frontal boundary in the Central US sparked patches of clouds and pockets of light rainfall in the Plains and the Mid- to Upper Mississippi Valleys.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of 1 degrees at Stanley, Idaho to a midday high of 84 degrees at Kendall, Fla.

Is more CO2 beneficial for Earth's ecosystems?
Posted: 10:47 AM EST on November 20, 2009
We should emit as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as possible and oppose efforts to regulate CO2 emissions, because more CO2 is good for the Earth. That's the take-home message of an audacious TV ad that was run this fall by the advocacy group, Read This Blog Entry

Today in 1982 marked the end of Hawaii's 23-year streak of dodging hurricanes. Hurricane Iwa engulfed the islands of Niah, Kauai, and Oahu with 130 mph wind gusts and sustained winds of 100 mph. It was the first hurricane to hit Hawaii since Hurricane Dot in 1959.
