Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, May 11, 2008. Typhoon Rammasun is not expected to make landfall Sunday as it begins to recurve northeastward well east of Taiwan. The storm will maintain either Category 3 or 4 intensity throughout the day before weakening into a Category 2 storm early Monday.

A pressure gradient produced by the typhoon and a feature to the west will instigate breezy conditions from Taiwan through Japan. A line of moisture will extend northeastward from the storm through the Pacific Ocean. Some of this moisture will produce showers through Honshu in the morning before diminishing in the afternoon.

Farther to the east, a low pressure system will drift eastward through northern China towards the Yellow Sea. This feature will produce showers through the northern Yellow Sea, including Beijing.

Typical showers and thunderstorms are expected through the Gulf of Tonkin, while southeast China will remain dry.

Tokyo will rise into the mid-50s(F)/lower 10s(C), while Shanghai will see temperatures in the lower 70s(F)/lower 20s(C). Seoul will rise into the upper 60s(F)/lower 20s(C).

For Australia, a large high pressure system will move through the southeastern portion of the country Sunday. This system will produce moist flow along the east coast of the country, producing showers.

The rest of the country will remain dry and mild, with the coolest temperatures expected in the Bass Strait area.

Sydney will rise into the upper 60s(F)/lower 20s(C), while Melbourne will see temperatures in the lower 60s(F)/upper 10s(C). Brisbane will rise into the upper 70s(F)/mid-20s(C).

Cyclone Nargis death toll may top 100,000

Dr. Jeff Masters

The tragedy of Cyclone Nargis' aftermath in Myanmar continues to intensify, with the top U.S. diplomat in the county now predicting a death toll of 100,000. A death toll of 80,000 has been estimated by a local official in just one district of the country--Labutta--so the death toll may go much higher than 100,000. Although the first major U.N. relief flight of emergency supplies has finally landed, the criminal indifference of the nation's leaders towards the plight ...
